To The Tien Shan
(applicants from all countries are welcome)
What participating on an exchange to the Tien Shan
involves:
This side of our cross-cultural exchange scholarship provides funding
and arrangements to join mountaineers from Kazakhstan in the Tien Shan
mountains. It involves serious high-altitude mountaineering up to
7000 meters on the mountains surrounding and including Khan Tengri
(7000 meters) in the South Inylchek Glacier region. It could typically
involve preparing a base camp at approximately 4000 meters, then setting
2-3 higher camps during acclimatization before attempting summits.
The total time on the glacier of approximately 2-3 weeks is supplemented by some
time visiting the countryside surrounding the Kazakh capital of Almaty
and going to and from the Tien Shan by bus and helicopter. This trip requires familiarity
with techniques of glacier travel and most aspects of technical mountaineering.

What participating on an exchange from the Tien Shan
involves:
This side of our cross-cultural exchange scholarship provides funding
and arrangements to join mountaineers from the U.S. in the mountains of
the lower 48 United States or Alaska, or perhaps other ranges. It
may involve serious high-altitude Arctic mountaineering up to 6000 meters
on Denali or lower-altitude technical alpinism, depending on the participant's
interests. We encourage Tien Shan climbers to take advantage of the opportunity
to pursue smaller, more independent or technical mountaineering goals which
are more common and available in the U.S. in the company of U.S or other
visiting climbers, or meeting climbers from other countries in mountain
ranges.
